I've struggled with anxiety most of my life. Over the last few years, as I've experimented with many management/prevention tools, while being purposely aware of how foods make me feel, I've discovered that sugar is a trigger. It's not that I'm instantly anxious after eating a high sugar meal (but I know some people who are! That's key — learning to notice the correlations between what you eat and how you feel.)

For me, when my blood sugar crashes after a sugary meal (especially breakfast...I'm looking at you, Cinnamon Toast Crunch from my college years!) or a very sugary snack, I get shaky. My heart pounds and I get lightheaded, which then makes me anxious, because I start freaking out that I'm going to pass out or that I'm going to feel this way forever (anxiety isn't always rational).

So. Best way to avoid feeling that way (trust me, it isn't pleasant), is to keep my blood sugar stable. (Insider's tip - we ALL want our blood sugar to stay stable because that prevents major cravings, energy dips and mood swings!) Best way to keep your blood sugar levels not looking or feeling like a roller coaster, is to eat balanced meals + snacks. Balanced, meaning they're not weighted too heavily on the sweets – even if they're from fruit or other natural sweeteners (yum, maple syrup). You need to balance those things out with protein, fats + fiber. This is why I rarely have fresh orange juice at brunch - as yummy as it is, it's so much sugar, and without the actual fruit, the fiber is gone! Some of my favorite keep-my-blood-sugar-stable-so-I-don't-have-a-panic-attack snacks are:

  • Almonds with dark chocolate chips
  • Apples with sunflower seed butter
  • Hummus + chopped veggies or crackers
  • Edamame
  • Greek yogurt* + chia seeds or walnuts
  • Grapes + cheddar cheese*
  • Protein balls made with oats, nutbutter, honey
  • Date balls (I need a better name for these, clearly) made with dates + walnuts

*if dairy doesn't bother your system

There are many so hummus flavor options
